- A smoke alarm is required on every storey used as living accommodation
- A carbon monoxide alarm is required in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance, such as a boiler (gas cookers excepted)
- Alarms must be working at the start of each new tenancy
- Rules differ for HMOs and in Scotland and Wales, so ask us or your council

Do smoke alarms have to be mains-wired?
New homes and major renovations need mains-wired, interlinked alarms. In existing homes battery alarms can meet the minimum, but mains-wired interlinked alarms give better protection because one alarm sets them all off.
How often should alarms be tested?
Press the test button once a month, and replace alarms at the end of their life, usually around ten years.
Can you help with a system for an HMO?
Yes. Shared houses often need more detection than a family home. We can look at what you have and what is needed.
